Chinese New Year

Late this January, Chinese students from the university gathered to celebrate the New Year. The reason for this seemingly belated celebration is the varying dates between the Chinese and Western calendars. In 2009, the year of the Ox (based on the Chinese zodiac), Chinese New Year fell on January 26th, and in order to honour this Chinese tradition, four student societies—ABACUS, the Chinese Society the HongKong Society and MSSA—collaborated to organise a Chinese New Year dinner party on January 23rd.

The evening was kicked off with a festive lion dance, a celebratory act that originated because the loud colours of the “lions” and the high level of noise was said to frighten away evil spirits. In line with the coming of the New Year, this was believed to ensure a happy new year.

As those who are familiar with the Chinese New Year traditions would know, a reunion dinner is held on New Year’s Eve where the entire family gathers to welcome the New Year. This dinner is important to many Chinese families because they believe in the significance of the dishes consumed. Some of these dishes include fish (yú), because it is a homophone of the Chinese term for ‘blessing’, and a vegetable called ‘fat choi’ in Cantonese because its name sounds similar to the Chinese term for prosperity. These familiar dishes were served at Zen in their sumptuous eight-course meal, helping to trigger in all of us a distinct sense of nostalgia for home and for familiar customs and traditions.

Even after the final dish was served, the evening’s excitement had not yet come to a close. There was even a raffle draw with many attractive prizes up for grabs. These included iPod Touch, Sony Cybershot digital camera, 5.1 audio speakers, DVD player, printer, iPod Shuffle, champagne, memory storagee dvices, as well as vouchers for Dynasty, Zen, Obento, Kin Yip Hon and Matana hairdressers. This certainly helped to increase the liveliness and festive spirit of the evening as many of us went home with prizes, indicating, indeed, a very auspicious start to the year of the Ox.

This was the first event to be organised since the Christmas break, and it was an overwhelming success and every participant enjoyed themselves thoroughly and visibly, buoyed by the Chinese New Year festivities and the high spirited conversation of the evening. It was the perfect way to usher in the new year.

Nottingham Games 2008

For the Nottingham Games, Singaporean and Malaysian students from all around the United Kingdom gathered in Nottingham to participate in various sporting competitions. This year, Bristol’s girls took part in netball and the guys took part in the soccer and table tennis matches.

In order to catch the morning coach at five, we had to wake up a ghastly hour—four a.m. We turned out to be an hour early for the day’s events, but in spite of that, we were all energetic and in high spirits. We used our spare hour sitting in the coach, chatting and going over game rules and strategies for netball since we were all new to the game as a competitive sport and had never trained as a team before. An hour later, other teams from the other universities began to arrive at the Nottingham sports centre, and some of us even got to see our Singaporean friends. The mood was grand and we were all feeling ebullient.

Considering it was our first time playing netball together, we were considerably nervous. Our nerves were partly exacerbated by the fact that we had only seven players—the required size for a team, with no reserves. The pressure was on! We played against the teams from Warwick and Manchester universities, whose players were mostly from national netball teams. We played our best and our hardest, but were ultimately beaten by our competitors’ honed skills, conceding several goals. Nonetheless, Wensi was our heroine of the day with her point against Manchester late in the day. Although we lost by an admittedly large margin, we still had a blast, and were not embarrassed to be defeated by such experienced players.

After the netball matches we carried bags of chips and went over to watch the guys’ team play soccer (5 a-side) against Hull University. Mid-match, the weather took a turn for the worse, and it started to drizzle intermittently. However, with irrepressible spirit, our guys played on resiliently and managed to score several goals. Paul even scored a penalty point! The competing teams were all extremely strong, and unfortunately, we were defeated yet again despite our valiant efforts.

We bid our friends goodbye after the event was over, and some of us were overcome by nostalgia for the good ol’ days back home. When we returned to the coach, we felt slightly drained but also thrilled by the day’s action. Chris, our lovely coach driver, was a comforting presence as he drove us back to Bristol. By the end of the day, we were tired and hungry, but the morning’s ebullience still showed on our faces.

Hari Raya / Welcome Dinner

Upon our return to Bristol following the laid-back summer break, freshers and returners alike were warmly welcomed by the committee’s first organised event – the Hari Raya / Welcome Dinner.

With the aid of the very helpful warden Dr. Crossley Evans, we had no trouble at all securing the venue, as was the case for the previous years’ welcome dinners. At the dining room in Manor Hall, the long dining tables were tessellated with scrumptious offerings from Mayflower and JoyRaj catering services. There was a plethora of Asian cuisine, which helped us all negotiate with the transition from home sweet home back to school. Between friendly catch-up conversations and silly jokes, the platters of Sze Chuan chicken, duck, mixed vegetables, fried rice and halal curry dishes were extremely well received. Slowly but surely the quantity of food on our plates diminished, and we were faced with a devastating crisis – insufficient food for the palates of our insatiable students - the committee could not have anticipated such an overwhelming demand for food, and our initial supply fell sorely short. The dishes were nearly polished off even before the event neared a close.

Thankfully, on a move spurred by quick thinking, we zipped over frantically to a nearby Chinese takeout joint, Chi, meaning “eat” or “food” in Chinese, which effectively nipped our problem in the bud. Armed with packets of takeout Chinese cuisine, we headed back to Manor Hall to feed the hungry awaiting mouths.

With the food crisis alleviated, all of us at Manor Hall could finally sit back, relax, and enjoy the food, conversation, and the much missed companionship of our all friends at Bristol. Moods were high and the atmosphere feisty, and the dining room resounded with the chirpy voices of its students. At this point, the once-brimming platters tessellating the dining table were now gleefully empty, and in stark contrast, the well-fed bellies of the students were finally satiated.

With everyone filled to the brim with Chinese and Indian-Muslim cuisine, the night gradually rolled to a close with slightly sleepy but light-hearted conversation and witty banter, occasionally triggering giggles and chuckles from all around the lengthy table. As we left Manor Hall, there was no doubt that all of us were glad to be back here in Bristol, surrounded by friends whom we could always rely on for hearty fun-filled conversations and nights out.

Summer BBQ

Upon the highly anticipated and fervently celebrated end of examinations for most, the new Committee aptly organized its first event – a Summer BBQ! Given (what one might describe as) the temperamental Bristol weather, lady luck shone upon us that day as the sun, too, shone stubbornly in the sky. Camaraderie echoed throughout the charming Goldney Hall, a seemingly popular venue at which two other barbeques were taking place at the same time. In spite of the crowd, our Summer BBQ was by and large a smashing success, complete with scrumptious snacks, enticing entertainment and cacophonous conversation.

Preparations for the event commenced with grocery shopping for an alarming array of food – juicy burgers, fluffy marshmallows, buttery corn on the cob, and finger lickin’ good chicken wings were just some of the items on the day’s impressive menu. The cashier at the store must have been wondering just how large an army of people we were going to feed!

With good cheer, we lugged the heavy grocery bags back to Goldney Hall, where we realized (to some distress, as you might imagine) that there was no barbeque pit – the Goldney barbeque pit had been removed! – Certainly heart attack inducing, that was. Fortunately, we had Gaiatri and Farrah to save the day. Acting on a sheer spark of genius, they dashed to the nearest Sainsbury’s branch for a portable BBQ pit, which the boys managed to assemble promptly upon their return. Thanks to the quick thinking and deft hands of our happy campers, our preparations did not go to waste.

Following this was the fun part of the afternoon where everyone tried their hands at barbequing. The boys marinated the chicken wings with a deliciously fragrant glaze whilst the girls roasted marshmallows to perfection – crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside. Even at a post-exam barbeque, everyone was hardworking and co-operative, working seamlessly together to generate the incredible fun and laughter which was rife in Goldney Hall. The food turned out, admittedly, near flawless. Nicholas, for one, loved the burgers, with their soft buns and ripe succulent patties!

Bonds of friendship, if not already forged, were clearly further strengthened during the afternoon’s BBQ. It was a much-awaited chance for everyone there to indulge after the tedious examination period, be it in Frisbee, junk food, sunshine or conversation with friends. After an extended term of sitting at our desks and poring over textbooks, we were all grateful for the opportunity to stretch our stiff legs chasing after a plastic disc and bask in the radiance of some rare Bristol sunshine.

As transparently clichéd as it sounds, all good things must come to an end, and that included our very first Summer BBQ. Watching everyone pack up and leave, it was clear that everyone had a tremendously fun time at the even, which only makes us more excited for events to come.

Asian Cup 2008

Earlier in May, MSSA fielded a team of footballers in the Asian Cup organised by the Hong Kong Society. It was certainly an indelible experience as our boys emerged victorious and clinched the Cup. Well done!!

One Year

“The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot.”
--Michael Althsuler.

I believe for most, if not all of us, that the MSSA has etched many unforgettable moments which defined our past year in Bristol. As a note of appreciation, the Committee would like to make special thanks to the University of Bristol Alumni Foundation for generously supporting these memorable events:

Welcome Tea at the Flutes -
gathering on a sunny afternoon in Singapore where seniors prepped the Freshers for the upcoming year in Brizzle!

Freshers Fair –
where we all got out membership cards and t-shirts

Hari Raya Dinner –
the first event organised by the 07/08 Committee: food; friends & fun!

Asian Society Halloween Party –
a collaboration with other Asian societies to celebrate Halloween

Nottingham Games –
GOLD to our football squad!

Lush –
a joint social event with other Asian societies

Bath Christmas Market Trip –
hopping on the train for a half hour ride to Bath was certainly worthwhile: who wasn’t mesmerised by the pretty lights and what all the stalls had to offer?

The Oriental Festival –
where several Asian cultural societies gathered for a night of food & fascinating performances: remember the Prata?

and of course…

Budaya II (Malaysian-Singaporean Night) –
our annual flagship event: how can anyone forget? Captivating cultural performances complemented with a sumptuous dinner which certainly showcased the Malaysian and Singaporean heritage

The Alumni's long-standing support has indubitably been pivotal to the success of the multitude of events held by the MSSA; and in particular, the Malaysian-Singaporean Night. We are truly grateful and look forward to another year of cooperation with the Alumni Foundation.
